Antony's Fire

Devil's grass, bereft and dead
shrouding the words the wind said
and the oil, spilled from the sky
the day Jesus was crucified

The grass creeps along the bone
blanketing mold on the stone
I am now just ash and dust
and the yew tree buried in rust

I am risen, I am dead
I am the old and dry bread
I am God, I am Acis
and the wilted Saffron Crocis

Chase the moon
to the tomb

chase the sun
Jeshrun

God is gone

i am hamlet
i am juliet
spread on the surgeon's table
with my
  heart cut
                  out

Scarab King
Maggot Queen
seen, unseen
memories

I am Grass, I am ash
I am the pathogen
in this unreal city
I am the plague, I am the fly
I am bone underneath the ground
I am the murmur of the ghost
in the back of the raven's skull

I am dead

bouncing
like

a cigarette

Ring around the oak tree
pockets full of pigweed
Disease, disease, children fall down

whoa..... I'm going to have to read this one again! LOVE the imagery and flow you have here. You combine three of my favorite subjects--eternity, great literature, and grit.. The one thing that threw me off was the phrase "Bouncing like a cigarette." I used to smoke myself and don't ever recall my cigarettes bouncing. Strange simile, but I'm sure you had some meaning behind it. Anyway, great piece and most excellent luck in the contest.

You certainly do have a biblical obsession. This piece is once again filled with symbolism and metaphor dealt in your dark, descriptive manner. I loved the little "heart cut out" and your ending was superb. They rhyme was also intelligently done. Great work!
