The five little Peppers
Were a family of five,
Poor but brave and cheerful.
What were their names?
I can't remember. Oh, Polly
And I think Phronsie, the two girls.
And the boys? Ted, maybe.
There were three of them.
There were wonderful drawings.
It must have been Victorian
Judging from the long dresses.
Their mother was brave too.
(Of course. In books, the poor
Are always gallant and soldier on.)
Somehow they managed
To have an incredible Christmas.
I remember a picture of the tree,
Loaded with toys and other presents.
There was a rocking horse somewhere.
It might have been for Phronsie.
All this from a secret benefactor?
Of course, their fortunes improved
And, in the end, they had lovely clothes,
Lovely toys, and were still kind
And still polite to one another.
Perhaps a longlost cousin left his fortune.
Author notes
A slightly snarky note has crept in. That's me as adult but, when I was a child, I loved the book unconditionally.
