Recreational Sonnet

By  your good intentions we've been driven
To spend, ban and destroy for our own good
Now what's left's the world we will be given

While every one of you who's ever stood
Has promised only that you will do more
And blindly we still vote just like we should

But now's the time, we have a line to draw
Your brainwashing and prisons aren't the way
It doesn't work - learn from what's gone before

Stand up and admit your mistakes today
We know the things you told us were not true
For once think of the people not your pay

So please just leave us to do what we'll do
The war on drugs cannot be won by you.

Author notes

The "War on Drugs" and the "War on Terror" are horribly Orwellian concepts that allow governments to spend billions of pounds/dollars on fighting enemies who will never, and can never, be defeated.

I'm not sure whether to call it a Terza Rima or a Modified Sonnet. I used Terza Rima rhyme scheme, but I made sure I had 14 lines of iambic pentameter too,
