I don't quite know how I expect this to help your friend but emotions not shared or needed to be hidden gives more feelings in the negative than is, sometimes, even bearable. But just imagining that maybe one day they'll care gives hope and imagining that even if that never happens their happiness makes it not seem like your going through something in vane, which is basically what this is saying but then again, maybe that's just me making reasons for it to be ok. Anyways, I hope this helps, but like I noted earlier, I don't know how.
