Inexactly beautiful

you are
he said to me
neither classic nor traditional
neither modern nor romantic
simply inexactly beautiful

what exactly did he mean

i stood before the mirror
and surveyed
her critically
seeking insight into who
she might exactly be

with Ruebens' gentle curves
and Leonardo's quiet smile
the hidden sensuality of Georgia
and Pollock's sense of style

the picture came together
and surprised me
yes indeed
she was inexactly beautiful

and altogether ME

Author notes

Inexactly beautiful...a phrase he gave to me years ago..and now I know what he meant..thank you my friend.

    aaww

I love the innocence and imagery here. It is sweet when someone like us just the way we are and it makes us feel like someone care for us.

I am not sure what you meant in the fourth stanza but it still was aweosme!! I do hope you stay with this person forever. Good luck in the contest!

    loveees,

The fourth stanza reflects artists who are known for certain styles or definitions of beauty...Reubens painted full figured nudes...Leonardo DaVinci painted one of the most beautiful smiles (mona lisa), Georgia is Georgia O"keefe known for her use of flowers to depict sexuality and sensual ideals and Pollock is Jackson POllock..abstract artist....smiles

This is unique because it is a personal thing between you and him. I'm glad you've finally realized what the phrase meant, that is awesome and I hope it made you feel good.

wow really sweet poem right here, I don't completely understand the inexactly beautiful term, but I do at the same time!

    "neither classic nor traditional
    neither modern nor romantic
    simply inexactly beautiful"

I suppose it means that you're beautiful in your own way?

Very good write all in all!

Very interesting, indeed women's lives are complicated by the standards set by various men in our society (including Rueben, Leonardo, etc), though you seemed to embrace this rather than challenge it. I would like to see you do the opposite. Lovely read anyways, thanks for entering.

I liked this - the allusions were effective. However, i said free verse only. Even so, nicely done.
