coming to terms with determinism

and yesterday when i saw you falling into the ground
and i saw your eyes
and i saw your face
and i realized that in that very
self-same moment
you were going to die
i couldn't come to terms with it
because i had the knowledge
and i had the wisdom
and i had the ability
to
stop
you

foreknowledge
and the peace of mind to reconcile myself
to surrender myself
to the idea of determinism
that no matter how hard i may try
to stop
you
"fate has a way of course correcting"
and the outcome is still the same

so what then?
do i bow down to the whims of time and space?
do i watch you die as i knew you would and pretend that
i
am not accountable?

if such knowledge is too terrible to be understood
let it be such
that i
will not
stop
no matter how many times i need to save you
because i
as one ruled by sentiment and virtue
will not let fate win me out
i cannot watch you die
not when i know that i alone can stop it

Author notes

determinism: the belief that all human events are predetermined, similar to fate, such that no matter how much one tries to reconcile oneself to the idea of controlling their own destiny, it is impossible to escape the grips of time.

quote is from lost by ms. hawking - the idea is that if one had foreknowledge of the future and tried their best to change it, destiny would figure another way of achieving its ends. thus, the persona is caught in a time loop in which they continually try to stop something from happening only to have to try again, as fate continues to course correct.

inspiration came from a paper i am writing for ethics and morality about the moral and ethical philosophy of david hume and its application to desmond david hume of lost. but that's irrelevant.

This was interesting in it's own as it is something also that weighs heavy in my mind as a regular every day thing.. I am a firm believer of fate, destiny, and all that stuff as well as more complicated planes and time lapses as you may already know.. I believe in truth without seeing and I also believe in second site.. If I where to witness a vision of the pain or harm or even death of someone I cared for I know I to would end up caught in the "time loop" as you speak of..

This poem has a lot of intellectual truth and I was honored to read it.. As sad as it was to read it was also very filling and the honesty of the truth was undyingly beautiful.. Congratulations on Honorable Mention..

thanks dear...there is more truth than poetry in this (no pun intended) but it was in part my meditation on the paper i'm writing. its a good paper, i think. a lot of facts woven into the lost story line. and desmond and charlie make me sad. but that's the way it is.

      love you dear.
