Sylvia Plath (and Ted Hughes)

There was a young poet named Plath
Whose husband caused plenty of wrath.
They both got some fame
But he got the blame
And outlived her by years.  Do the math.

Author notes

I'm inclined to think Ted Hughes got somewhat more blame than he deserved for Sylvia Plath's suicide at age 30. Guess I'm not a total feminist!

Read The Bell Jar, Sylvia's novel based on a early breakdown and suicide attempt.

A limerick doesn't give much scope for all this but here it is.

I never could get into Sylvia Plath's poetry. What I did read held no light for a person of such privileged birth. I'm sorry she couldn't find more warmth in her living. I can't comment on her husband, because I don't know enought about him.

    Interesting limerick...

He sure has received more than his share of the blame and true they both have remained famous, her, somewhat for how she died, him for what some feel were his contributions.

    Good luck in the contest!

You packed a lot into this for sure. Reading her poetry tells us about the woman that was on the inside to a large degree. I always felt she was on a road to nowhere, so sad she never saw her own worth. thanks for this great entry into this contest. ~Von~

A neat encapsulation of a troubled lady and her spouse. Well done.
Anyone who reads Lady Lazarus http://oldpoetry.com/opoem/8464-Sylvia-Plath-Lady-Lazarus would know of Plath's fascination with suicide. She tried it even before she met and married Hughes. She was a ticking bomb.
