Grandpa's Tractor...-

When I was born my grandpa thought,
Move up in times and so he bought,
A tractor new, an orange bright,
With me today so thought I’d write.

He kept his team of matching grey,
They quite a sight, so large were they,
He kept them till their lives were through,
It was just right for they were due.

I rode with him, sat on his lap,
To home from fields, turned over black,
On dusty roads, through pastures green,
Through wooded hills and gurgling streams.

I later helped and drove for him,
Till it was mine at final hymn,
And then my girls rode on my lap,
Till moved away, now they are back.

I’ve carried seven grandkids too,
Forget their friends though quite a few,
It is quite nice to drive around,
No need for roads just solid ground.

I use it still, now sixty years,
It works just fine in all five gears,
When cutting wood I like to haul,
Large logs up grades at just a crawl.

I rake the hay in summer time,
It takes me back when in my prime,
When I could work from dawn to dark,
For now it seems I’ve lost that spark.

This year starts new for fifth in line,
First ride for her but last of mine,
My daughter asked if I would give,
This friend to her, while I still live.

I guess its right, I earned my due,
Though I don’t think she thought or knew,
My grandson now will help rebuild,
This tractor old, my life fulfilled.

what a lovely write, this reminds me of my fathers old tractor which he still has, and used to drive me around on his knee. He's got a 39' ford and a 44' massey furgussen. Mostly used for clearing the snow and getting wood for winter and cutting the large lawn

So glad you decided to join in the festivities and entered this grand write. Beautiful use of meter and rhyme and what a wonderful story you've told here. Even better than the passing on of this old work horse is the tridition you've established that will live on long after you've left these earthly bounds Thanks for the entry and best wishes in the contest...I see judging won't be easy

    Yep.

They do not make them like they used to do anymore? Antique tractors today are quite the rage and to have one that has worked for that long. I know you have a prize there Jim.

    Jim,
I really liked this...reminded me of a country song:
    "She thinks my Tractors Sexy"

    ever hear it?

    Thanks for visiting my poems.
