Descent

Echoes of hell whelp and howl, overdose death,

a contemporary victory of bondage and cruel slavery.

Burning incense of denial,

a fallen soul lost control,

fathers and mothers weep loss of their bold dreams.

Echoes of hell whelp, and howl, a baptized hope,

lays dead upon the floor.

The thundered sounds of piercing nails,

For death’s dark soldiers cannot claim,

the name of this lone child.

Echoes of hell whelp and howl, heaven's father,

pulls his weary child safely through heaven's door.

Restoring faith, hope and love.

For standing in the distance,

a lone image of a wooden cross

silently drips tears of forgiveness.

Echoes of hell whelp and howl,

Scanning the earth quietly,

Awaiting the descent,

of your approaching child.

Contest prompt#4
What are you afraid of....

what every parent of a struggling alcoholic or drug
addicted loved one fears is ?
that the only cure for addiction for their child?
Will be the peace of death.

The haunting silent prayer, that the suffering
has finally ended, and they are whole in heaven
happy, smiling, and most powerfully freed.

Statistics came out last month, in my State,WA.
in just two counties, King & Snohomish,
three people today will die of alcoholism or
opitate overdose.

I wonder how large we'll let the number become,
before we take action and make addiction a priority?
the avg. age of death under 37yrs.

I really liked this poem. Also, you should publish the author's notes on this page as its own poem on AP. I liked it too =)

I had to click on this when I saw the title,

knowing that you rarely write darker poems.
I feared the worst (that your child had succumbed to the dark peace death offers), yet hoped for the best.
I am relieved to see that your battle is still raging on.
Wonderful poem!!! Your style is really evolving and improving in amazing ways. This was most excellently rendered - the repeating first line of every stanza proved very effective.
I know that it is difficult for you, to fight this constant battle, to always fear the worst (overdose death). I have you and your family in my thoughts very often, and please know that I am always here for you (even though I've been admittedly neglecting my favorites lately - and I'm sorry for that).
Your statistics were terrifying and enlightening.
I think there are two great tragedies occurring with the youth of our country today, which we need to give more attention to and more actively try to prevent:
    1) drug overdose
    2) suicide
Maybe you and I can put our heads together and come up with some way to better educate the masses about these atrocities.
Thank you for a wonderful, heart-felt write.
I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers, Kathleen.
