she visits the hairdressers
every five weeks;
she likes it short
(when length really
doesn't matter anymore)
she doesn't need the mirror
in the mornings
a simple wash and go,
scrunchitupmessy
with posh smelling gunk
that costs the earth
she always says:
"leave the back wispy
in my neck, feminine,
my son calls it my lesbian
butch look otherwise..."
in the eighties
she used to wear a tie
with her suit and waistcoats:
a bit of oneupmanship;
boardroom games that
she won and lost
these days
she wears what she likes
and still keeps it short...
every five weeks;
she likes it short
(when length really
doesn't matter anymore)
she doesn't need the mirror
in the mornings
a simple wash and go,
scrunchitupmessy
with posh smelling gunk
that costs the earth
she always says:
"leave the back wispy
in my neck, feminine,
my son calls it my lesbian
butch look otherwise..."
in the eighties
she used to wear a tie
with her suit and waistcoats:
a bit of oneupmanship;
boardroom games that
she won and lost
these days
she wears what she likes
and still keeps it short...

I haven't visited the hairdressers in hmmm.. ( counting here ) 5 years .. and before that it had been a good seven so I figure my average is about once every six years...
My hair is long, so I throw it in a pony tail and when my bangs get too unruly I cut them. I wear a hat mostly everywhere so it doesn't much matter what my hair looks like, and I never have to fuss in the mirror --
the best part of not caring -- if you asked me.
So essentially of course what I'm saying is so do I, and have for a long, long time

"with posh smelling gunk"
You know, I am going to adore any poem that brings to mind the sumptious smells of Posh Spice. I mean, if you're married to David Beckham, you MUST smell great in gunk, right?
And I know that is what this poem has to be about. I mean, you even described Victoria's latest haircut: "she likes it short" and "'leave the back wispy / in my neck, feminine'" and "these days /
she wears what she likes / and still keeps it short" ...
On the other hand, I think you need to read US Weekly a tad more often. Posh doesn't go to the salon every five weeks, but rather every five DAYS -- more, if BFF Katie Holmes also needs a sprucing and Tom is willing to permit her to be out of his eyesight for more than 30 minutes.
I really do love your poetry about Spice Girls, Elaine. And PSSST, we both know that you really wanted to write about Scary Spice, but it's just so hard to describe that hairdo as compared to Spice's, right?
Seriously, lovely poem here Elaine.

There is such an 'in your face' I am me and I don't care what you think ..voice in this. I love that about this.
One day I'll wear my hair short (comfortably) and I'll think of elaine when I do it

I like a woman who is not afraid to be what she is, no matter the opinion of others or society. This is lovey poetry, Elaine - real life poetry.

This is cool. I used to wear my hair cropped.
It was an interesting time in my life. Sometimes I miss that edge that I used to have.

-
Yeah, that's what a woman who knows herself does ... what she likes

-
hell yes!!!
hahahhaha - I used to wear half of my brother's wardrobe in the eighties.... fred perry t-shirts... he'd go mad cause i'd leave them with bumps in the wrong places... and of course a thin cowboy style bootleg tie, brogues and those funny little segs on my shoes.. i prayed that my mother never found out i went to Wigan... i fessed up in my 30's that I went there...
I love your hair lady, and I don't care if it's short, long, or inbetween.. so snog me!!
am i a lesbain...
.......... gin soon

Standing Ovation
Ah Elaine, so happy you entered. I'm dancing in my chair, yayness!
Anywho, killer ending hun, killer. "oneupmanship?" I admit, I'm slow, I had to read it twice to see what that said.
Elaine = Creative (insert clappies)
Uh, I can't get over the ending, its fantastic.
Okay, on to the message, "she's the man"? More or less that is what I got from it, but I think its penned much stronger than that..
I like that you could either take this for the woman living in a man's world, or the man (the son's) perception of a certain thing. Both aspects fit the contest criteria.
Well done Elaine, thankyou so much sweety for entering this.

just getting in touch with my masculine side

men are allowed to get in touch with their feminine so why not eh? lol!
i suppose when i started it it was going to be about social/relationship/sexuality stereotypes, short hair, men's shoes = masculinity but then it became more. ..
once upon a time in order to succeed a woman had to have 'balls' in the office,
and then it became quite simply - i think i am happy the way i am and i don't give a damn what others think -
thank's for the opportunity to explore as i haven't written anything in ages!

I think i used to have a hairstyle similar to hers. No mirror was needed. Except when my hair is cut short it gets shirley temple ringlet curls lol.
excellent poem.

thanks i think that ringlets would be cute

mine just sticks out!

mmm... a sixteen year old friend of my son made me smile a few weeks ago with his off the cuff comment:
"it's not the wand it's the wizard" - i guess that's where the quirk came from and
i guess size doen't matter when you get to 47! lol
glad it made you smile too
