a Glasgow snapshot

Look up as you pass through –
you may see the ghost of Greek Thomson,
brushing a hint of Alexandria
across those tall reflections,
the windows which see out over the streets.
Binge-drinkers at pavement level, oblivious,
make a bee-line for the nearest pizza
or, in rare moments of brilliance,
climb and paint a bra on a statue,
but that will be when the guitars and bagpipes
that battle for fifty-pences
have given way to the cop-car sirens
and their after-dark music,
the foursome reel of roughnecks
when the Bhoys beat the ‘Gers,
or maybe vice versa. We never close here,
we just get a little emptier.
The pigeons sleep on window-ledges,
and the taxis move, and move…

    Nostalgia and surrender.

Brilliantly written with a nostalgia that is being overwhelmed by modern day influences. A poignant collection of glimpses of the old and the new and leaving the underlying question of where we may be headed.

  • Is there a guy named Anthony that works in that pizza place? I think I know him!

Probably. But the last time I was in Glasgow there were more pizza restaurants than you could shake a crummock at!

Like I said, Lane, I don't live here. The contest rules said not to tell the setter where I live, so I wrote about somewhere else!

It's a pleasure to write in your company too.
