Face down in the dirt
With few memories
To hold dear in my heart
He's left his family alone.
Again.
Why does he torture us like this?
He comes to us,
He begs for his forgiveness...
And a cheerful welcome to him once again.
Each time he makes us doubt
A future without a father
Here with us.
A father
To protect,
To love
to cherish,
to forgive,
To scare away the monsters in our closets,
To kick out the annoyances that won't give up.
A father to be a FATHER.
But each time he comes back,
He takes our money,
Our food,
And our hearts
And leaves us alone.
Again.
We've come to realize,
He's not the father we imagine.
Not the father we wish for
With all our might.
So this time he's not leaving us
To fend for ourselves in this world.
We're leaving him behind
To build our own lives
And to live our deserved fairy-tales
That he would never give us.
Next time he comes knockin' at our door,
Begging for fogiveness,
Our trust,
And our hearts to wound once again.
He's the one left in the dirt,
FACE DOWN
with tears in HIS eyes.
This time, we've decided,
He's not coming back to claim us.

Sad situation for any to go through, you penned this well, could perhaps, use an edit, when you ask "Why does he torture us like this?" I felt like it was an abrupt change in the poem.
But I like this none the less.

wow.. I like this poem.. thought my father never left us.. I sometimes wish he had.. then maybe the abuse would have stoped.. is good that your leaving him behind.. just don't take your anger or hate of him with you.. leave that behind as well.. is not worth carring it with you.
