One More Lap

Missing image
The morning light fills my room and
a smile creases my face.
I made it through another night.
I’m still in the race.

My name won’t appear in print
as one of today’s obits.
Thinking this I ponder:
Is this as good as it gets?

I’m too young to be too old,
I’m not the Bingo type.
I don’t enjoy “the good old days”
It’s just a way to gripe.

I watch my diet, keep in shape
and daily run the beach.
I dance and I still chase the girls
though they’re often out of reach.

Now my memory gets spotty.
It’s a challenge I am facing.
I caught a lady yesterday
but forgot why I was chasing.

I still enjoy a drink or two
though it often comes to naught.
More than one beer and
it’s wasted. I have to pee a lot.

But all in all, life’s still worthwhile
and I live each day to the max.
When I’m dead and buried
I’ll have lots of time to relax.

Youth is now sold in a pill
but I think that you will find
that nothing take the place
of an active, busy mind.

As we approach the finish line
too many people choose
to slow their pace to delay
the end but that is just a ruse.

I’ll hold my pace and extend
the race. I’ll add another lap.
Excuse me now, I have to go
I think it’s time for my nap.

    VERY ENJOYABLE!!!!

As I am now into my 50's I begin to feel this way. Hard to keep up with today and memories of yesterday in my mind. We do take each day as each day comes though and make the best of it.

They say 50 is the old 40...BS. It's 50 (LOL). But that doesn't mean you have to buy into the mindset that old equates to non-value. Stay young in your thinking and don't worry about what others think.

What a wonderful work. I follow the flow and brought through the read with painful truths, age is not something with an escape. In youth, we can not wait to age enough to join or participate, as the sun moves past our zenith we celebrate wisdom and accept our fragile limitations. I wish you the best in the contest.

Usually I'm disappointed by featured poems and won't reply to them but I loved this one. This poem goes right along with what I am learning about in my college classes about the elderly and I loved the message you have in it. You also kept up a nice flow throughout the poem and some of the lines were fairly clever. All in all a good read.
