What War Is This?

What war is this of twisted metal and rising smoke?
Of blood mixed with oil and cries of pain that choke.
Shattered panes of glass lay in a million shards upon the street.
Stone cold dead eyes looking past the heart that fails to beat.
Could we have not stopped this carnage of thousands dead?
With far more wounded beyond repair intead.
Can a Lord of all look beneath the contempt
as the last raven flaps away from the stranger unkempt.
No war so tragic as this, than to die upon a hard blacktop.
And there is the wailing of the ambulance and a state cop.
This is the battle the mothers fight each day
along with the fathers and still we pray.
Not one more death from alcohol or careless deed.
Alas but still the battle goes on with the cries unheed.

Author notes

We lament the wars that kill our soldiers but there is a war that is waged each year by MADD. Each year more than 50,000 are killed on the highways and three times that amount are injured permanently. The toll is higher than the number of soldiers killed in Viet Nam. Last year in Virginia over 1,000 were killed on the highways. Add that up for the number of years in one state alone and it is more than those taken in Iraq. Among them was my brother and I have had other relatives killed and severely injure. I mourn the loss of life by any war of any means. But this is a war just the same.

    wow

What a wonder piece you have penned here. This really hit home. My mother's uncle of 89 was recently killed by a 19 year old lad, who had been taking drugs, who knocked him dead as he stood on the roadside at his broken down car.

    Figures

says alot to thoses who are not informed.

Like more people die from being mismedicated in hospitals than are killed by guns each year. Where is the Doctor/nurse controls? Nope, lets just take all the guns away.
