My Final Speech

A skill I need for my career,
is one of my greatest fears.

I'm in my classroom at Death Row High.
I know that I am about to die.
The shivers are felt, and seen in my hands,
hoping that I meet the public's demands.

I walk like a dead man walking,
I talk like a dead man talking,
while I walk to the guillotine.
the great executing machine.

I have to give one more speech,
the last time that I have to preach,
to tell you all I hate stages,
ice cold crowds and note-filled pages.
My head's as black as the night,
I don't want all the spotlights.
My mind is filled with stage fright.
I prefer to be the one who is dead,
than to give the eulogy for Ned.
Oh no, I've stolen a joke,
the first sign of a true choke.
I avoid their endless stare,
which is like a predator's glare.
My sentences are quite choppy
and my fluency becomes sloppy.
More waiting is more suspense.
Tension becomes more intense.

There is the firing squad without mercy.
Get this nightmare over with and shoot me!

Author notes

The stolen joke is "I prefer...for Ned."
Jerry Seinfeld made that joke once.

Thanks for the feedback. The heartbeat rhythm is a great idea but I think this lack of rhythm is okay, because you can't keep control of your speech (I mean the natural rhythm of your speech) if you're afraid of giving a speech. But it's just my opinion.
