Wicked water surging pushed by devastating wind;
Flooding homes and businesses on which people depend.
The poor and the disabled with nowhere and way to go
Were left behind to suffer in this misery and woe.
Food and drinking water poisoned by the raging sea.
Starving men and women begging help to be set free.
We sat stone faced and petrified at what we saw and heard.
Waiting for the government to give the saving word.
The weakest and the poorest faced the tortures of this land,
When poverty was stricken down by Mother Nature's hand.

This poem was inspired by and written to address a particular quote by Kahlil Gibran which is, "COMING GENERATIONS WILL LEARN EQUALITY FROM POVERTY AND LOVE FROM WOES".

Did this poem effectively describe the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? I believe that this was the most signifigant event in a century to point out the plight of the poor in our society.

Absolutely! A very effective piece that shows how slow governments are to respond to human crises.
Thanks so much for your entry
