A Sea Of Glass

Behold the ferryman
The humble servant to your every wish,
A stranger to this darkened land,
You have come here to find
What hides behind your reflection,
Underneath objects of affection,
Down curious paths to the other side,
All the misplaced memories you might find,
A journey you could not resist ;

Can you smell the stillness in the air,
Uneased by the sickly sweet silence of it,
We cast off in search of the answers,
To all those elusive questions
That you should have quietly dismissed ;

You need to see,
You want to understand,
What returns home from the mists
Will be nothing less
Than the shadow of a shadow,
A pale and hollow heart,
Forever lost innocence ;

It is the price of wisdom,
It is the fare I seek,
You must exchange your illusions
For the only truth that could ever set you free ;

Not even the ravages of time
Could wash away the stains of human savagery,
For the deceived
To believe
You must truly see ;

We come upon the stilled ageless masses,
Gravestones
Like a river of diamond laced ice,
It flows on relentless
For endless aching miles,
Haunted faces frozen into each perfect facet
Like fragile paintings of faded grimaces and smiles,
Running timeless through the valley of the tragic.
You can hear the echoes of their wailing cries,
An angry melody
Haunted choruses of grief
To all those lost memories defiled ;

Children hanging from the trees
Like innocent iridescent chimes,
Blown by cold acid winds
Caressing them into a crystal lullaby,
The final frozen flash
Reflected in the horror of their eyes,
Tears like salty mercury
Fall softly into the silver oceans
That pool beneath their shrine ;

Behold a forest of cinders
Where happy homes once stood,
All those dreams reduced to ashes
Just twisted imprints upon wood,
Tread lightly upon their charred yesterdays
That reddens your skin with bitter ancient rust,
It was so many lives and dark days gone by
That now cover you like crimson angel dust ;

Fear no evil,
Come take my hand,
The shock and awe of it all
Will eventually pass,
The dead speak no riddles
You cannot learn to understand,
Sail with me now
Upon this ship of sadness
Onward
Through a sea of glass :
