The Cat in the Hat...

Missing image
On this rainy day I sit,
                      sit,
                        sit.
And think of my favorite book just a little bit.
Of two children one girl and one boy,
Whose mother was out for the day,
and it was way to dreary for them to go and play.

Reading that book again to my children today,
opened up a part of me that I thought I had locked away.
A part hidden in a tiny flat,
Of that mischevious Cat in the Hat.

Who should not have been there, who should not have been about,
who shouldn't have been there when their mother was out.

Yet I remember wishing how much that cat would come to visit me,
I didn't have any fish to chase him away you see.
I'd run around with thing one and thing two,
O' the many adventurous things we would do.

But although the cat never came and wiped his feet on my mat,
that never kept me from imagining that I'd meet that cat.

So every rainy day I would sit,
                            sit,
                              sit,
and look out my window for just a little bit,
there was nothing to do and it was to wet to play,
so maybe the cat will come visit me today.

But now I'm much older and I know he won't come,
to wish for that now, would seem kinda dumb,
but as I read that book to my children on this rainy day,
I told them maybe if you think real hard,
and imagine it so,
that Cat in the Hat may show.

He'll knock on our door, and wipe his feet on the mat,
The very tall Cat in the Hat.
He'd bring thing one and thing two,
and O' so many adventurous things you'd do.

So there by the window they sit,
                              sit,
                                sit,
as the rain doesn't let up not one little bit,
their looking and wishing,
through all the splish splishing,
that a very tall cat,
with an unusually striped hat,
would come about,
while their mother is out.

Author notes

As if you can't tell my favorite book as a child was The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, and now it has become a favorite book of my own children.

i like how you wrote this poem in a "Seussy" way great job--there's a lot to say about this poem and i dont know where to begin....i just enjoyed it very much, and i found it cute that you switch off with a memory of you, then of the book, i found that clever and brought a lot to the nostalgic aspect of the poem--from your perspective and the book's--great job--thank you for entering and the best of luck in the contest....:]
