Dr. Popovich

black pavement
in pink pinstripes

bright bands
on buzzing branch

bright chirps

of waking wrens

below the rivulet's splashing waterfall

a tiny crayfish scoots along

we meet in quiet places

a crowd streams by

oh yes, to fly freely

and cuddle with me

exotic poise

in sensual grace

spots hang
on 6 legs

you away from me
my pursuit is primed

Author notes

My favorite teacher taught oral interpretation to Drama Students, Education Majors and Public Speech majors. James A. Popovich was more biting and constructively critical than Simon Cowell!

He demanded consistent perfection.  You were allowed to chose the material, he judged your choice and your delivery of the material. You were not allowed to memorize/recite; your work had to be delivered live, in class using the traditional Reader's Theater format.

This random collection of writes really capture Dr. Popovich's methods... It is eerie how he worked and his goals of individual growth and development.  We did not compete among ourselves, but we strove to improve our personal best!  We had to ignore James A. when we presented, hard to do, but it was the only way to get along!

Yes, we remember the ones who made us try a little harder and not just accept the c's, but then some never saw our work as a's, so we were in limbo. Dr. Popovich seems like he was this kind of teacher. Lasting impressions!

I am confident that your teacher would have liked this poem!

This madly creative poem is wonderful. Poetry gives the reader images and creates stirring emotions and your poem does all of that. Made me smile and laugh and appreciate how randomness is so beautiful.
