You remember Davies? He died you know.
When? Oh, two or three weeks ago.
Hadn't seen the blighter in forty years,
now suddenly his name appears.
I read it in the obituary section--
What? You think we should have a collection
for his widow? Was he wed? I never knew,
but count me in for a quid or two.
Poor Davies...well, I suppose it shows
how time flies and life just goes.

This reminds me... one of the things I love about the UK- this is a typical pub conversation in a small village- tackling the larger questions of life and humanity in the simple and small words of a local event...brilliant, beautiful and poignant. You make me miss old Blighty and the characters from the vil- whom I miss and adore, even all these years later.
Lovely!

Swell!
I like the dialogue, and more than that, the rhyme, and more than that, the philosophical observation that life goes on for other people and even ends while we are concerned with our own business.
This is an excellent little poem, I'm happy I looked. Best of luck in the contest!

wow.. at first I was like, " I don't get this poem" but in the end it all came together.. I really enjoyed reading this piece..Great write..
Peace to you, Jetleena. -
You did well ...
with this most interesting first line. Your poem reads quite well and has a nice rhythm and rhyme to add to the enjoyment. I would have never done so well myself given this first line! It does seem like just the way the conversation would go ... Good luck in the contest. joy

This reminds me of the conversation in the day centre I work in when the Courier comes out and the clients turn to the obituary notices. Well Done.
The first line comes from a poem called Death of a Peasant by R S Thomas. I can't find a link to it. -
Jacques:
"Hmmm... le vieux DuBois... le voici dans le journal."
Jean:
"Vraiment? Le vieux Dubois? Pourquoi?"
Jacques:
"Parce-qu'il est mort."
Jean:
"Il est mort? Le vieux DuBois?"
Jacques:
"Oui. Il est mort."
Jean:
"Eh bien... c'est la vie!"
