A Tree Yarn

Once upon a looking glass memory
a thought of Beauty recalls a tree
remembered as her eyes enchanted me
dear touch aged bark began long journey;

able was i ere i saw elba, ohio too
nearly a palindrome on red white and blue
near the land of Lincoln, where Obama grew
to lead in days of need, dreams come true;

Ah, but i lose place it was all about the knot
colors and yarned rainbows, a melting pot
wishes and prayers faraway soldiers forgotten not
hope colors cheeks, ached from smiling a lot.

Let the children gather, reach and see
that a town can show love and kindess through
good times and bad, warmth in downtown snapshot,
a little time we take to make our children happy.

    there is no confusion Lincoln and Obama were/are Illinois Senators, 'grew' in the political leadership sense; Lincoln was a rich corporate lawyer, Obama a middle class community leader, there were hundreds of stops on the underground railroad...good point; happy to consider your suggestions; and anything else on the purpose of the project would be helpful too...PK

    I can see the confusion since Obama grew up in Hawaii, not Illinois. I do see a connection between the rainbow coalition and the colorful tree and appreciate the sentiments of showing love and kindness. Given that Ohio has its own rich history, including the underground railroad in Yellow Springs, I think the poem could have been stronger, if you wanted to go this route. (political)

    A very interesting take on the photo. I was just curious at your choice in punctuation, and the mention of Obama, who has no ties to Ohio, although true you said near. Best of luck with your entry.

      ...Obama was mentioned as a son of Illinois like Lincoln, so you perceived something that was not intended, I smell a Republican[smiles], i think he has many ties to Ohio, the most important being that he will try to save some of their children from fighting a war for profits somewhere, and try to rescue them from the pounding they have taken in loss of jobs and careers over the past eight years-- the incredible shrinking middle class...

      anyway, its good to share a laugh and a point of view...PK
