Jerusalem, Jerusalem

Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
now burning to the ground,
what sorrow does the Beast now wreak,
what agony been found?

Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
the City I adore,
has now been razed unto the ground
to shine now nevermore.

The seige they laid, the terror there!
What madness has been wrought?
They burned the City, burned it down,
and left it there for naught.

They took your wives as concubines,
your children as their slaves,
your men were murdered on the spot,
interred in unmarked graves.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
what has become of you?
Handed o'er to despots now,
wond'ring, 'What shall we do?'

O, my, dear sweet Jerusalem,
Zion, once great, is now
an ancient home of eidolons,
whilst despair roves abound.

No obeisance be given--
nor does a soul disdain--
just pity and a saddened heart
at this great City's pain.

And Greece! how she despised your Jews,
and ripped your world apart,
besmirched your customs bent your will,
tore out your ancient heart.

A Maccabean war ensued;
you fought that Villain King,
restored the land unto its right,
and let new freedom ring.

Alas! and did it come to pass
that Rome thence set to war,
so took away your freedoms, and,
in time would take far more.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
your Prophets have you stoned!
I've longed to gather you just as
a hen takes in her own.

-Arëbyl

Author notes

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing."

-Matt 23:37

"...that Villain King" is the Greek king Antiochus Epiphanes, who persecuted the Jewish community during the Greek occupation of Israel just before the Maccabean Wars in the late 160's BC until his death in 164 BC.

This is not a religious statement. I merely came across the quote from Matthew and thought it was interesting, so I built a poem around it, detailing further just what he meant by that (he was referring to Jerusalem's future destruction that would occur in 70 AD). Anyway, so there 'ya go!
