I like where you took this quote. I expected to see something on love or desperation, but this was interesting. I think mainly because I, myself, can relate to it. I love how you captured how someone depressed or "wrong" can be so enchanting and enthralling, as though their pain and psychological distress is a work of art, in a sense. The ending was good too. You kept yourself from just being detached and the last line suggested forgiveness and love for the beautifully ugly person.
The line, "The clueless kind of smart" was good as well. Maybe it's merely from my personal experience with bi-polar and psychotic people (literally) but this is such a good way to describe how they act. They are incredibly smart, often, but they're so detached from reality they can't comprehend what's going on involving them. Sometimes they don't care to, and sometimes they merely can't. This line is important to me because it doesn't belittle their brain power, and the word clueless doesn't make it their fault.
My only suggestion would be to maybe make it longer or expand on it. Maybe a few more metaphors. I guess "pretty it up" a bit.
