I heard death coming through the night
He was a soft train rattling through the distance
His large headlight hanging in my window
Sliding along a track of sparkling stars
Brilliant like metals and fire
I heard death coming through the night
Heard his steady engine rolling in tune
With the chirping of cicadas
Stopping, finally, in a cloud of smoke
And fog that settled on this city
I heard death coming through the night
But I could taste him in the morning
When his fog spread poisoned dew
Water cried from broken, dying hearts
Bitter and chalky like that of ash
My husband does not believe in death
He says it was just the Midnight Express
I know better, I heard those worried arms
Drumming louder than the wheels
As death slowly ground away again
I heard death coming through the night
He was a soft train rattling through the distance
His furor, his anger were wisps of dark steam
A rancid smell, he is, just like those smokestacks
Rising up from that Nazi facility in the distance
