Not So Bad

It ain't easy standin tall
when all you got is pride
When sister Sorrow comes to call
you best just stay inside

My shoes were wearin awful thin
my coat was patched and frayed
My spirit hung, just like my chin
Low in Life's Dismay

From somwhere in the shadows
Lo! A man came out to stare
He looked no better off than I
-on speaking terms with Care

I told him, so that he would see
my woes and struggles, true-
He just smiled and winked at me
and pointed at my shoes.

Ain't you lucky! He proclaimed
Exhorting fortunes fair
I didn't understand-
until I saw his feet were bare.

Author notes

Just when I think I've got it bad... There is always someone worse off (and usually with a better attitude than I have). It humbles and delights me.

    Poet

One excellent piece of poetry with a great message. And the rhyme, just perfect. Loved it.

    Insightful!

Valuable lesson here Tills, we all need to be aware that there will always be someone with more misfortune, and steeper hills to climb; myopia does that...

Good to read you again, thanks for the gentle serving of insightful wisdom. Consider it received.

    smiles,

    ferg

    well done

I like the pace and rhythm of this poem. It's a delight to read, and full of meaning.
    favorite lines:
    From somwhere in the shadows
Lo! A man came out to stare
He looked no better off than I
    -on speaking terms with Care

I told him, so that he would see
    my woes and struggles, true-
He just smiled and winked at me
    and pointed at my shoes.

I tripped just a little on one line:
    All tangled in Dismay

is it contorted, sagging, set askew, or...
In any event, I think it's a well penned reminder for us all.

I loved how you told this ...

in a smooth narrative, leading the reader from stanza to stanze with a fast and constant flow.

Well done. Thank you for the reminder.

    Love

Freakin sweet as always Tills. Reminds me of the time I saw to hobos passing and tell eachother "merry christmas". Struck me as odd at the time (15 or so Years ago). What can I say about this poem that isn't obvious to see? It has ample rhythm and ryhme (you know how I love those), and it tells a great little tale with a nice lesson to learn from. Once again reminding me why you are my favorite poet of all time!

I complained day after day that I had no shoes
until I met the man, with no feet...

Tis so true, no matter how bad we think we have it,
there are many who are way less fortunate.
Tonight 30,000 children will die, from the consequences
of malnutrition and starvation, and yet we sit here
with our bloated belly's bitching because Johnny took
the last slice of pie...and we only got ONE...

It's not because people have too little that they are unhappy, but rather because they have too damn much.
The next time we find ourselves bitching because
all that's left is a Mounds and we wanted an Almond
Joy we need to remember that many don't have ANYTHING
to eat, let alone all the treats we munch during
    the course of a day.

There are families of four that live on less a year
than what the average American spends on coffee or soda during the course of that same year.

    Shame on us...

    False bravado
    Sashaying her new skirt
    insight of homeless mother

    Hugs...Eddy
