The Salvation of Technology

I know yu may not understand
How technology saved my life;
How electronic gadgets
Drove off hardships and strife.

I lost my sight completely
And it seemed to much to bear;
Not knowing about my future
Or building a life out there.

Training help me adjust
And I learned of many things;
Braille, long canes, and gadgets
That can do most anything.

These miracles of technology
Have offered me a chance;
A chance at independence
Free from tragic circumstance.

Computers filled with software
That reads the screen to me;
Software offering gifts
Of opportunity.

Electronic scanners
Copy text from page to screen;
Text that I can now read
Even though it can't be seen.

So many ways technology
Has helped to save my soul;
Keping hopes and dreams alive
And giving me control.

This technology I'm blessed with
Has changed my life indeed;
Has changed it for the better
Because now my life I lead.

Author notes

I wrote this poem from my own personal experience. Being blind since 1989, the progression of technology has influenced my life in countless ways. Whether it is by using digital bar code scanners to see what items are in my kitchen cabinet or using screen reading software to operate computers and access the internet, technology has offered me the ability to change my life in many profound and wonderful ways.

    Yes, absolutely

    For you, technology has been your salvation. To most of us, it is a mixed blessing - we are so busy checking our email or talking on cellphones, seems to be little time left for face-to-face human contact. But for some, dealing with disablitites has been helped a great deal by techs. A good piece, as it gets the point across, and rhymes.
