When She Smiled...

When She Smiled...

your tiny palm
opened like the arch of a rainbow
dimpled fingers
curling like ribbons
to softly wipe my tears away
(so it would seem)

though fever ravished your body,
desire burned in your soul
and I saw the moon shelter your eyes
(in baby's sighs)
letting her light heal you-
conceal you

in love

and you-
so much stronger than me
you lent me the heart to smile,
and wipe away your tears
with the knowledge that I
will not have to bury another child

Author notes

A contest I posted recenntly made me remember my youngest daughter's birth. She was born with strep b, and had a very high fever. She had to stay in the NICU for two weeks, and it was very touchy, and hard on my family. She was such a strong person from the start. She gave me the strength needed to pull through. This is for my Cassie bean.

Please tell me what you think

I am so touched by this write. My Maura had the same story, only it was a matter of hours-the NICU bastards would NOT let me have my daughter, because she had fluid in her lungs..I was beyond scared..and we just went through another infection, in the same lung-8 days in the hospital..and she just turned 4. One day she was playing with her sister, and the next, she had a 104.3 fever, and was exibiting signs of shock..
I cannot tell you how earnestly I prayed. She's home now, and doing fine, just like it never happened.
All appears normal, though I know in the back of my mind, it could happen at the drop of a hat, and that's scary.
Anyway, sorry about the confessional, I wish Miss Cassie bean the best always, and you too, of course..

Very Emotional write. Brought tears back to eyes this time. Amazing how our children give us such a wonderful feeling inside our hearts. Good Luck in the contest. She sure is a sweet little girl.
