as I had run completely out
I stored them in the pantry
Which one will I have tonight
so hard to pick and choose
they are all my favorites
what about where I'm naked
not wearing any clothing
and the crowds are staring
or maybe where I'm flying
just barely above the ground
so breathless lest I fall
or the one where I'm fighting
where the blows never land
and ineffective when they do
or trying to get to work
and the car just wont start
so then I just start walking
or when my bladder is full
and I think I'm on the john
waking up when it's too late
the one in which I'm angry
it always makes me twitch
and make such strange noises
how about where I'm falling
now why would I buy that
must have been marked down
I think I'll have the one
that takes me back in time
I've not seen dad in ages
Author notes
Inspired by "Dream-Pedlary" by Thomas Lovell Beddoes
From guest malmadre (contact)
I love the old world dialect used in the poem, and I guess that was the style of the day and the area. My favorite section is "A cottage lone and still, With bowers nigh, Shadowy, my woes to still, Until I die." .....This would best heal my ill, This would I buy. I would be interested in buying a dream of this kind if the price wasn't so dear.
A dreamless sleep is like an uneventful life. Some people live more fully within their dreams than in reality. I welcome them all the bad along with the good. Was it Shakespeare who said "to sleep perchance to dream"
If you could buy a dream what would it be about?
this is a rare attempt on my part to do free verse,
I am a rhyming fool...

I think custom tailored store bought dreams are a great idea. Too often we have no choice in the matter at all!@
nice one, Pat

Love the title, and the idea of browsing through an assortment with preference determining choice!
Especially enjoyed the final two, "falling...must have been marked down," and "I've not seen dad in ages." Enjoyable contemplations!

Yes! "To sleep perchance to dream" was Shakespeare [Hamlet] but don't worry for I have no "slings and arrows" to throw here.
You have allowed us to caper through your dreams with a carefree abandon that would have pleased Sigmund F. You have even listed some I would hardly believe can be favourites "waking up when it's too late"!
Thanks for sharing these
PS remember that comment in your notes!

thank you for the comment, as for these being my favorites, I guess that I meant that sarcastically, this sounds like a dream diet, I cant have the good ones they make me fat.

oooh oooh - I've had some of these dreams! The naked one, flying, falling, the one where I'm fighting/hitting or kicking someone but no damage is done no matter how much energy exerted! It's funny how many dreams are common to everyone. One of my least favorites is one where I dream I am awake and getting ready for work only to wake up and find I have overslept!
Thanks for a great read - I enjoyed this poem. - NANGALEEMA

I know I wrote a comment for your poem but I have no idea what I've done with it. Here goes: No. 2 - your last few lines hit me right between the eyes as I can relate to you wanting to see your Dad. That is one of my own dreams too. Peeing in your pants - that's a dream that could quickly become a nightmare. :)
I enjoyed your entry, thank you so much

Thank you for reminding me to comment on the beautiful original, written with such style and hard to emulate.
I never saw much of my dad due to a fracture of the family, he died long ago, so when I do see him in my dreams it is a much more pleasant visit than I ever remember in real life.
As for peeing in the pants, that's a rude awakening!

What a darling poem this is!
Makes me happy to read your dreams, for I might join you in some of them.
Well said, most truly, and cleverness all throughout.
