The Caretaker

They say I am the caretaker
Of their far distant farm.
I look after all the cattle,
And help keep them from harm.

I fix the fences when they break,
And remove the trees that fall;
I clean the troughs as needed
So there's water for them all.

I move the stock as feed runs out;
Or, perhaps that dam runs dry;
I hate seeing bony cattle,
It could almost make me cry.

In time, the clouds will gather,
Once more will thunder sound,
And gentle rain fall steadily
On dry and thirsty ground.

Then the fields will be green again;
The grass will be knee high.
Another summer will have passed
For caretakers, such as I.

In a list

Absentee owners are just slightly uncaring

    I don't know how I ever manage to let this one slip by me. It's a good thing I am going back one by one looking for those that escaped. There...captured! I thought this was just brilliant and to have so much care to make sure the cattle on the distant farm. I thought this was superb. Love how you portrayed this and how you brought the land to life with your words. I hate people who forget there animals like that. It makes me mad. I am so glad there are people like you in the world that these poor animals can rely on. Thank you for this wonderful read and for showing me another wonderful human being that loves without predjudice. (I knew that already, but it doesn't hurt to say it).

      This is an older one I wrote when I was caretaking. It used to make me mad that the owners never even came to see their property unless i told them they had fat cattle ready to sell. I left in the end because of their uncaring attitude. I had some lovely girl friends there weighing in at 650 Kg or more, charolays, like other cattle, have the softest eyes when you get up close.
      I really do appreciate your digging up the older ones. It is something I do myself instead of just pushing the "return the favour" button. Reminds me to read my old ones and maybe edit where necessary. many thanks for that.

    As I read and re-read this pleasant work, I see a noble stockman. His quiet passion shows in the way he feels the rhythm of the land and in the daily commitment to his task. This is an excellent lesson on dedication.
    Thanks for sharing this very enjoyable piece.

      Hello James, welcome to my ramblings. Circumstances and old age decided me that caretaking was no longer my cup of tea. I am focusing more on hobbies I have suspended for years. I do regret leaving the farm animals as I seemed to have had a special kind of relationship with them. I thank you for the supporting comments and the encouragement. I am really a retired carpenter who has a love of all stock and animals in general.

    You know

    Some do not like rhyme. But this is excellent with a wonderful story behind it. And may the caretaker be always there . well done

      Regretably Bob, the caretaker has moved on. Literally.I am no longer in that situation. I am now more engaged in hobbies I have been putting off for years. I do appreciate your comments and thank you for the encouragement.

    Oh!!!. this reminded me of home.. It brought tears to my eyes and I know that may sound weird but I have not been home in so long... When I was younger me and my sister would do this for some of our church members.. We always had a great time.. And for some reason it made me feel so at peace doing all that work.. Coming in all sore from a hard days work yet you know that you did a good job and most of the time you walk in with a smile on your face.. Well I did at least.. thank you so much for writing this!!! It took me home if only for a little while..Beautifully done..
    Bravo!

      Thank you for you delightful comment. I have been caretaking for a few years now and will stop doing it in the next few weeks. I have too many hobbies to enjoy and not enough time.

      Many thanks Linda, I appreciate your comments. Makes me feel like a poet. We have some rain here and the world is a litle greener for it. We are preparing to move house in about a month so the rain will be good for the next place. I shall no longer be caretaking, and will have more time for the hobbies. Whoopee!!!.
      Cheers, Bob

      I write about these things now, while they are fresh in my mind. Time will give me another place to write about.
      We live in a dry continent, in a dry place, yet it has a beauty of its own.Thank you for reading.
