I like to watch their faces when I say,
"I've never been."
As if they revel in the burden of excellence.
A question always follows,
Since it seems so commonplace, that missing out on such a thing makes me inadequate.
My answer varies,
"I turned him down."
or
"I can't swim."
or
"I don't even want to go."
or sometimes
"I wouldn't know what to do once I got there."
But they're all lies, as I was born for The Water.
So far I haven't found an honest answer but,
"I just haven't."
Afterwards they say,
"You should go."
or
"I'll take you there."
or
"I wish I'd never been."
But either way,
When the time comes,
I'll be there,
And until then,
I won't.
I've read the maps, and tried to find it myself,
But never quite made it to my destination.
There was always a detour,
or
A reason to turn back,
or
No reason to start looking in the first place.
They'll slash your tires if you idle too long.
I used to say I'd seen the sights,
Just to fit in.
But I find my place among the ranks,
Of those who've never been

Brilliant! It seems there is always those of us who have "never been" in the diverse walks of life yet there has not been a poem that I have read (besides this one) that has penned that feeling of doubt, loneliness or complacency so well as you have here. Congratulations! You are a very skilled writer!
