As the light marshals it’s final assault
Upon the darkness vault
To overthrow the origin element
Trying to stuff the vent
With the construct it’s within
Cannot ultimate win
Banished now to return
At the time appoint
When the dark renewed anoint
As the light expends it’s final strength
The fear returns at length
The outer limits tread by few
Banished soon those who do
Try the extent and bounds
To increase their surrounds
Only by abandoning the light
And stepping forth into the night
Far from comfort and plush
Hardship and pain flush
The fear and weakness from the soul
To reach man’s ultimate goal
Down the path only one can tread
For those else who try, dead
End up fouled on the breakers
The devil’s benefactors
Succor on the flesh of the misguided
Who find their worth along wrong paths
Ultimitely damned to the curse
Of the silver tongued cur
Who leads even the mighty astray
Towards the hellfire of day.

In a great book on writing called Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg wrote, "You must learn to write the way a wild animal cries out in pain. There you will find your own unique voice." You write that way. First thoughts only - raw and alive. I read it three times and found more layers every time. You're a great writer for one so young. Your experience as a soldier seems to have pushed you through some doors early and widened your perception. Don't ever stop. I'm seriously impressed.

P.S. I just added this to my "favorite poems by other AP writers" list.
