The Wild Horse

His heart, fired by battle,
hammered against the riders legs.
His mind screamed in fury,
“I don’t want you here”
he launched himself in the air again,
and again.
The person clung to his back
with the tenacity of
a lioness gripping her kill.
A squeal of frustration was
torn from him as his hooves
hit the sun-blasted dirt.
The resulting dust cloud
clogged his nostrils and
blurred his vision,
sweat poured from his heaving sides,
but still he would not give up,
his entire being rebelled
against the intrusion of a rider,
the rider,
shifted slightly on his back,
and in that instant he spun around,
throwing his hindquarters into the air,
spinning again, and again.
Leaping and twisting until his
muscles burned with pain and
his lungs screamed for air.
In one final, desperate attempt
to escape
he hurled himself at the fence,
he would rather die than exist as a slave,
the fence loomed closer, bigger,
more solid with each stride.
He felt the rider shift again,
and as he launched himself into the air
he felt the weight leave his back,
he felt his legs crash into the railing,
the pain blinded him,
and he screamed again,
but not even the agony would stop him,
freedom was all important,
the sole reason for his existence was to be free,
and no rider would take that away from him.
He galloped away from that place of horror, heading home.
Behind him the rider threw his hat in the dirt,
and muttered “Well, that one is not for this earth.”

    Good

Good poem. I loved the description given. My one complaint is that it's a little anthropomorphic which is my pet peeve in the way humans perceive animals but obviously that really works for the poem so it's not a negative. Again very good

This poem is captivating. It grips you from beginning to end. I was cheering for the horse. You really captured the instincs of the horse and what is going through head. This is amazing.

    WONDERFUL!!!!

The taming of a horse can be rough like this and a few people are truly mean in their approach to it and others are kind and treat the horse with the respect it deserves. 's

this poem to me is sad, i've been riding for 20 years and have been lucky to have never experienced this. i lost my arabian 2 years ago and when i would ride him the only thing i can compare it to was a religous experience they make you feel free. it's a shame that people try to abuse them and make them fit into their ideals.

What a proud and brave soul. Yes, freedom is worth everything; even death. This really made my heart skip a beat, I so felt for the horse. Your description was very vivid. I could visualize the entire scene in my mind's eye. I was rooting for the horse the entire time.

I saw a horse go "crazy" once, a Pinto. She did a lot of damage, but she would not give in to her owner. Neither one would give in. She stomped on cars and bucked and kicked. It was really something; and I so felt for that spitfire. She was a beauty. Got to admire that kind of spirit. Yes, they are meant to be wild and free.

Thank you for your beautiful write!

I love horses, they are so beautiful. I don't like it when they are used to aid with fights though, although it happens rarely these days. It just makes me feel they are exploited as they didn't give their permission. Such a lovely animal shouldn't be wasted, they are very firm and strong creatures and very notable in my opinion.
