I sit here silently
Watching you die
You sit there quietly
With but a sigh

You look at my eyes
Full of tears
Wipe one away and say
'I'm so sorry dear.'

Just a little longer
Before you go
Stay with us together.'
You squeeze my hand
As a final goodbye
The monitar sounds like a band
And you go with a sigh.

I wrote this about my great-grandmother. She died of dementia on July 11, 2008.

Saying good bye is one of the hardest things in the world to do. Especially to a Grandma. I thank you for making me feel some great emotions. Excellent work. I thank you for entering the contest. This was very heartbreaking for me to read... my grandpa died two days ago after prolonged sickness and so I can relate to this completely. Fortunately the last time I saw him I told him I loved him... so I feel like I got some closure.
