Unaware the time drags
And the limbs stiffen and
Pain against the tissue.
Skin the weight of feathers
Sag and journey with every
Movement mustered in response.
Eyes that can barely open,
Look for light that hides the shade.
But the lids decay with every blink,
Pushing further away the gift of sight.
Bones break and lines form
In every dent that marks the body.
Scars brighten against pale flesh
And memories sputter into the air.
When words have lost all meaning,
And tongues have slapped in vein,
Cold enters into a form of tranquility
That yearns for the inevitable departure.
As we age
Knowledge flows into a marked grave.
We count the blessings but we fear
If time has deceived us.
As we age
We fight the growth that aids our existence,
And we accept what we can not see
Out of force than fascination.
As we age
We widow, we lose, we burden ourselves
And clench each other close;
Wrinkle upon wrinkle,
Flesh upon flesh.
