A Prayer for Peace

Dad put his babies
safely to bed
with a kiss full of love
on all of their heads,
and smiled at Davy
and Angie and John,
and prayed for the strength
to always keep warm
his wife and his babies,
and full of no cheer
he thought of the past
with a mind open, clear.

He knew things were crazy
and bad far and near
as other men's babies
went to bed with the fear
of never seeing Mommy
now that Daddy was gone
and killed by a bullet,
a knife, or a bomb.

So Dad softly cried
and held his wife dear.
And both of them prayed
both in love, both with fear

that he would soon leave
Mom and babies again,
and fight for his country,
his family and friends

and all in a war
none of them understood,
as they prayed that their leaders
would do what was good

and never take Dad
from his family and friends.
Yes, they prayed in the dark
for the war to just end.

and Mommies and Daddies
the whole, whole world wide
could go back to their babies
praying for those who died

and never fear danger
or bombs in the night
and know that it's over
and that Love made things right.

That the brave sacrifice
of so many good men
and the best of the women
made the world free again.

To lay down your arms
is no sign of the weak.
It is merely a sign
that you want love and peace.

Peace that will reign
in the hearts of all men
while mothers and dads
love their babies again.

Nice and full of feeling. I especially appreciated this:

    "To lay down your arms
is no sign of the weak.
    It is merely a sign
that you want love and peace."

Thank you for sharing this piece.

Touching, heartfelt. Rhythm seems to be a little off in this stanza. and Mommies and Daddies
    the whole, whole world wide
could go back to their babies
    praying for those who died

But, all in all, great job. If this is your Daddy, God bless and keep him and bring him home safe!!

A very fine write, just as it is. You have expressed the thoughts of millions of individuals around the entire globe. There is too much senseless killing going on. I wrote a poem called: "Hollows". I think you'll understand it's meaning. Please, also click on the references and you'll find a picture of the sculpture "Waves", which inspired it. Every time I see a family walking through this sculpture, tears come to my eyes, for the reasons expressed so elegantly in your poem. Here's the link to "Hollows":

This is beautiful, a wonderful philosophy that can be the truth. Written fron the perspective in which all should stop and view the world. We are all someone's child, or parent, or brother or sister.

omg THIS IS AMAZING! Best I've read today, it made me tear up because it is very personal subject to me. I hate war, and all we want is PEACE! But I have never had a family member lost to war. I thought it flowed incredibly well and I wouldn't change anything there. Listening to Dear Sons and Daughters of Humanity by Wolf Parade and it went RIGHT with the poem. It's incredible!

I really liked this until the sentimenalism kicked in. Not to say I would have a more perfect line to interject. Yet, this was a deep poem that surfaced too quickly. Became too obvious too soon. Nice poem either way...

    this is sweet.
to be perfectly honest, i thought it was a little mushy-- a little repetetive with the "mommies and daddies and babies" thing.. but i guess that's just me, what can i say? but really it's a good piece, and very well done.
    so keep writing ^^

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Loved this. I wish we could just leave and our enemies (the Islamic jihadists, of course) would recognize it as a noble gesture. i.e., "We did our best to help you. Now it's up to you." But they would probably be gunning for us just as much as ever, if not more, and killing their fellow Muslims completely unchecked, with even more relish. No easy solutions for this one, I'm afraid. And as always, the beleaguered U.S.A. gets no credit at all for not saving the lives of over 4000 U.S. soldiers and all the billions we have spent on this war by carpet bombing the whole God-forsaken place to kingdom come, as we could have easily done six years ago.

Excellent work, my friend. Just added it to my "favorite poems by other AP authors" list.
