first bite of candied apple…

first bite of candied apple…

i remember carefree days
watching ‘THE LITTLE RASCALS’
introduce themselves so politely on TV
“Hello Spanky,” “Hello Alfalfa,” “Hiya Buckwheat,”
bowing tipping their hats to us
then singing off-key
just as we did in church that summer
as fat Father O’Brien
new haloes darkening his hassock
kneeled and offered prayers to a blind G-D
candles burned to waxy tears
in that baroque whispered place
where peril and sweet conspiracy
combined as we stole money
from offerings – to buy candy
treats for altar boys
who like plump angels
floated down shadowed aisles
to know pleasures
ceremonies created in the mouth
could be as laughingly good as Alfalfa
somehow beating-out Mr. Butch
for beautiful Darla’s kisses of affection
none of us could ever imagine
the future betrayal of the priesthood
in ‘so-called’ unnatural acts
or our own juttings of soon-to-come sex
which to us could never be as blessedly sweet
as chocolate&caramel covered sticky lips from
‘Milky-Ways’ carrying us to sugared sins.

Yes and truly they should be dealt with as pedophiles instead of unapproachable saints. And nail their asses to the cross as we tell them we forgive them. Bitter? I'm not bitter! Am I? No! Not me! No sense in turning on the light if all you see is filth. Excellent write you have created and I still think Darla was playing the field.

    Wow....
    Such a unique piece...
Your muse went a totally unexpected path with this. It is always interesting to me how people can read the same thing and have such different interpretations....This is excellent imagery and has such shock value...
    Well done..

An interesting jumble of nostalgia sort of all spilling out at once. You're probably a decade older than me if you remember Spanky's gang... I only heard about them later though they may have been on in my day. I recall letting coins slip out of, rather than into, the collection plate... a dangerous game that! My dad woulda walloped me good had he known. I recall wrapping scotch tape around my finger backwards before leaving for church and trying to snag quarters. Ah, such days of innocent ignorance! I didn't know what all the money was for.

Amazing how something nudges our muse and we create a poem such as this. All this from a picture that reminded you of the little rascals. Takes one back a ways through these lines. The words come tumbling out and our muse takes over and doesn't want to stop.
