Using the text, define the following terms.

1.  Telescreen : A television screen that is used to display the Party’s programming and also to check on the people on the other side of the screen.

2.  Thought Police : a police force that hunts for thoughtcriminals and punishes them.

3.  Two Minutes Hate : A time in the day that all Party members must stop and watch about the Party’s enemies on the telescreens.

4.  Big Brother : A man who represents the Party and is pictured on Party propaganda and on the television screens.

5.  The Brotherhood (Page 15) : A legendary group that is against the party.

6.  Newspeak (pages 7, 45-47) : A language by the party that aims to remove all words that could provoke thoughtcrime, and therefore no thoughtcrime could happen because no one would know the words for such a crime.

7.  Ingsoc (Page 33) : English Socialism, which is totalitarianism.

8.  Proles : Anyone who is outside of the Party class. They were mostly unmonitored and had somewhat of a better life then the Outer Party, who is monitored by telescreens.

9.  Doublethink : Thinking two condridictory beliefs and and accepting them both.

10.  Vaporize : The Party’s word for the death of someone.

11.  Airstrip One : The land that was Britian.

Answer the following questions.
12.  What are the four ministries that govern Airstrip One? The Ministy of Love, The Ministry of Plenty, The Ministry of Peace, and Ministry of Truth.

13.  What are the three “sacred principles” of Ingsoc? (Page 25)  Newspeak, Doublethink, mutability of the past
14.  Why is Newspeak so Important?  How is Newspeak ironic? Newspeak is important because it contains no words that could be used for thoughtcrimes, therefore anyone who uses it can’t commit a thoughtcrime because they won’t know the words. It is ironic because while most languages increase in size, Newspeak decreases in size justifing how the party wants total control over the people.

15.  What are the three party slogans? War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.
