Untitled Morning Wonderings of a Jifted Love-Struck Mind

She was right.

I feel it rotting right here
in my skull
And this empty room is
merciless

But don't worry,
Even my crying eyes
Mean nothing at all.

They just mean
I'm like all the others
Oh God, I'm not-
Oh God
I'm not!

Just thought
You'd like to know

    congradulations.

You are an honorable winner. This piece was pretty cool, though it doesn't talk about overcoming adversity, just the adversity itself. At any rate, it was still pretty good.

    Congradulations.

Your poem has been chosen as a preliminary finalist and will recieve applause from me before I decide on the winners. Each poem also gets an additional comment that illustrates why it was chosen as a preliminary finalist.

This poem originally threw me a bit until I read your explaination as to why it fits in the "overcoming adversity" category. When I was in school, I passed the test to be placed in the gifted program in my district but I wasn't put in because the school felt that I "wouldn't make it socially". This was back in the early 90's when social development and "self esteem" was considered as important if not more important than giving children an actual education. It was absurd and i was very angry. I felt that the school's focuses on social development was put more toward homogenizing children and forcing them all into the same levels of intellectual development. So I related with this poem.

      "She was right.

"She" is an author of a book about the gifted mind, which states that the mind, especially a "gifted" one, is like a muscle in that it will begin to deteriorate and decrease greatly in function if it is not exercised to its potential.

That's a bit about what the adversity was.
