Lily

A haunting look
an unspoken plea
the old dog stared
from the cage, right at me.
A melding of hearts
spirits in kind
gave birth to a friendship…
two souls entwined.

Author notes

Lily is an 8 year old Scotish Deer Hound... slightly larger than the lap dog I was looking for (LOL) but just the perfect size for my life.

Congratulations on the Gold Trophy.. I really love this poem that you've written. She sounds like a wonderful dog. never seen or heard of a Scotish Deer Hound until you mentioned it.. this poem about her is wonderful.

Lily must have really touched your heart very easily because the Scottish deer hound is quite a large dog and as you wanted a lapdog, with that amount of difference I can only hope you have a large lap for her to sit on. This poem, though short, really summarises the one special moment when ‘you know’ you have found the right pet. I like the description of that moment as “gave birth to a rainbow” because it conveys so much more than those five words. I think when you find the ‘right pet’ they tend to look into you, reaching into your heart and soul, rather than looking right at you. I hope your rainbow continues to be colourful and shine brightly for many years to come. Thanks for your entry.

I see you understand completely! Thank you for a great comment... She's a marvelous dog and is thriving. It's amazing what a little food and a lot of love can do...

Cute and touches the heart of pet lovers. A photo of Lily would have enhanced this, I bet.

    good

This sounds like a perfect fit for the humane society ads we've been seeing lately on tv. the dogs and cats looking through cage bars with such soulful looks on their faces. I'm happy you found the perfect one for you. thanks for sharing. childlike faith

Anyone else ever felt that? you didn't choose but it was a mutual agreement between the animal and the human? That's one of the best feelings in the world... bravo.

That's such a sweet sentement. You can always tell when you look in your pet's eyes just how much they love you and need you. And thanks for giving a home to a dog who needed one, instead of having one bread just for show. there are so many animals who don't get homes because someone is too focused on having a toy to show off. Thanks for keeping an open heart.

Congrats on the gold. I am personally not fond of pets... I just hate getting attached to things... however I love me a good poem about animals once in awhile... you know if you haven't heard it I strongly suggest you find the poem, Beau. BY James Stewart!

it sounds like this dog was a rescue dog?
'the old dog stared from the cage'
which adds a nice gesture to the poem

If you would say "right at me" in your normal way of speaking, then it is ok for a poem. Yes, a poet can work all kinds of magic with words, but he doesn't have to. Congratulations on the gold.

I don't know if I would have said, "right at me." Sounds a little plebian. Perhaps, "into me." The latter seems more intense and personal, which to me is what it's really like. I got a basset mix from the pound once and that's how I felt. I loved him immediately, and he was the only dog in the whole place to lick me. I knew I had to have him! Good luck to you and your lovely friend! - oce

Congratulations on earning the Gold with this moving work of poetry. I feel the tenderness in your heart with each smiling word. Our pets are sometimes our only companions, and what dedicated companions they are indeed, as you have written here.

My dog is 13 years old. She is tired now, and stays with my Mom since my dad passed. So, my Mother has had her most of her life. I look into her eyes sometimes and see her weariness, and sigh. Although she may out-live me...who knows? I don't see her hanging on too much longer. Last year she had a tumor removed, and they couldn't get all the Cancer. ~sigh.

Thank you for this heartfelt work, and again, Congratulations on your win!

Much Love & Respect and please forgive the babbling on and on...
