With eyes so sad they could bring a tear to your eye
He came into our life this scruffy little guy.
"No! Never! He can't stay here!" was his final say.
"Only 'til morning then he's on his way"
"Please," I plead "only for a short little time"
I'll bathe him and get rid of all that grime
"Okay" he says, "a month and no more,
then he's on his way back out that door"
Twelve years later with tears in our eyes
We buried our scruffy old guy
A leader he was, never to follow the rules
This hound dog was nobody's fool
He cost us a fortune in medical bills
A different medicine each to take care of his ills
He has epilepsy or so the vet said
Needs dental work and oh my God, how he sheds
Finally we rid him of all those fleas and pesky little ticks
Now there is time to teach him a few new tricks
Roll over, stay then sit and turn around twice
Here are some treats for being so nice
Give me your paw, shake my hand
On hind feet he could actually stand
He knew with a look he could get his way
Those hound dog eyes kept the blues at bay
He gave us his love this scruffy old hound
A better friend could never be found
Then he left us in the beginning of the New Year
On a bright sunny day with skies so clear
Eyes so sad they could bring a tear to your eye
He left a hole in our hears this scruffy little guy

This is beautiful and sad, lots of memorable moments with your dog.

Oh this is so sweet and sad. It sounds like you loved him very much and had a lot invested in him.
I think sometimes the greatest pets turn out to be ones that find you instead of you finding them. This way you can really say he talked his way into your life with those puppy dog eyes. -
This brings tears to my eyes
I have lost a beloved pet. I still feel him with me sometimes. I haven't been able to get another one i just don't have it in me yet
Maybe someday
Excellent poem
Good luck in the contest

Awwwwwwwww how sweet and sad this is...pets becoming a part of the family..and indeed they leave a hole in our hearts when they aren't around anymore...
I have a dog that I never see anymore because he is with my X, if I see his picture I cry...although he is still alife I guess it hurts as much as with you...
I do hope another doggie caught your love and I do hope another doggie will catch mine some day too

Good luck in the contest

I had two wiener dogs that died, one was three years ago the other one was 4 years ago. They died on the same day a year apart. They were both 15 years old when they died. If i think about them or look at pictures of them i will cry, i cant help it they were everything to me. Sometimes late at night i feel like i can feel them in my arms. I miss them so much.
Im so sorry you lost your beloved pet.
He is very cute. Hounds are special
Maybe some day another pet will find you.
I loved this poem, good luck in the contest

I know what you mean when you say how you feel when looking at photos or at night holding them...In the last year of kobe's life he had such a hard time breathing...sounded like he had asthma and he always snored worse then my husband...sometimes I wake up and think I hear him and my heart skips a beat...We never quite get over losing them. I keep looking at pets in the paper for adoption from the humane society but hubby is emphatic about not having one...so I bide my time...like you say, one day another one will find us and tug at his heart strings...Thanks for commenting...

Kobe was such a cool dog, Darlene. I actually got teary eyed reading this and remembering him. I remember how I felt when our black Lab, Jake died and then years later my two cats, Boss and Chow.
This is a beautiful remembrance of Kobe and I bet he was looking over your shoulder from Doggie Heaven as you wrote this.
A wonderfully sad/happy, bittersweet poem. I understand where this is coming from.
Love and
Dee

OMG...here I thought after 2 years I was over shedding a tear for Kobe but as I wrote this at 4 this morning it started again...I guess you just never get over a loved pet...as you well know...

Oh how very sad, but it sounds as though you had many happy years with him also
best wishes to you and yours always

It was very sad in Kobe's last weeks...he had cancer in his bones and when we made the decision to have him put to sleep it almost broke our hearts...but as you say, we had so many wonderful years with him and 3 more then the vet said we would. Thank you for reading this...

Ok, don't take this personal but I often like dogs better than people!

Your doogie looks like a great fella, I'm sorry for your loss. I remember when mine died, it hurt so bad I vowed never to have another and 22 years later, I never have. I just get too attached and it hurts way too much when they die...Plus I'm lazy and hate to take care of them. Yes, maybe it's more about that than the attached thing!
Thanks, that was enjoyable to read.

You are right you know...dogs are way nicer to be around then many people. They love you unconditionally and never let you down. I would have another dog in a heart beat but hubby said no...he could not go through it again...and to think he is the one who said "NO" in the beginning...and besides we could never find another Kobe...he was very special...Thanks for reading this...Darlene
