And Then He Kissed Me

Missing image
Leaving somewhere and moving on
And leaving someone behind
Is always hard, heartbreaking
With sadness, one heart, one mind

We’d been friends for a year
Holding hands, saying nice things
Playing out each day without a doubt
That our hearts would always sing

Then came the day when Daddy said
We’re leaving here next week, you know
So bid your friends farewell at school
For soon we’ll have to go

Came that last day and he held my hand
One last time we walked out the door
Our teacher said good bye and good luck
We knew we’d not see each other anymore

He walked me to my school bus
We lingered, not wanting to part
... And then he kissed me
Said he loved me from his heart

I cried when we drove away next day
Leaving that Texas town and state
Just two broken hearted second graders
Forever victims of true love and fate

I never forgot that first kiss
The love that had no chance to grow
I wonder if he ever thinks of me
And if he still loves me so

A true love story from deep within my heart

Funny after all these years... about 64 of them, but I still have a little soft spot in my heart for that first love and thought it was so real, so lasting. We were in second grade and I remember that day so clearly. I think about JP every once in awhile and wonder what life brought him.

Ok, I've tried to read this poem about six times and something keeps getting in my way...but not now...I'm determined, lol

You know, the saddest thing, well, a sad thing, is knowing that someone can once love, but have no feelings about it later. Relationships come and go, and usually end in some degree of enmity, it's sad...why am I writing that? Well because your young man got me to thinking...you remember that love, which is great...but odds are, that little rat doesn't (at least that has been my experience) and that is sad.

Let's hope the guy still has those feelings...if so, I apologize to him for calling him a rat.

Thanks for coming back for a better look at this, Yem. I hope everyone isn't taking this piece too seriously. We were only second graders, so about six or seven years old. We had that cutsy girlfriend/boyfriend thing that real young kids have. I do have a bit of a soft spot for him or at least the memory of that kiss, but I seriously doubt that he even remembers me or even cared once he knew I was out of town...lol. And if I was to somehow run into him now or even years ago, if we'd have any kind of connection except for that quick little kiss.

But like you say... you guys are all rats to one degree or another

      Dee

This is so sweet...did you ever tried to find JP by the internet??? There are so many ways to enter ones name and stuff and you could ask him everything you want to know...You might even kiss him for the second time

This is lovely...to have a love lingering in your heart...I am sure I know how that feels...

    Good luck in this contest

Sad and yet a warm poem at the same time. Very well written and sweet! I also have those "what if" moments about love that was lost. Emotional! Good job!

I think there is someone like that for all of us. Mine was a crush I had in 6th grade. I was sure it was love and maybe it was because I still have a soft spot in my heart for him and wish him well on his journey.
This was a very cute story. It made me smile and say awwwww to myself and gave me fond memories of being a child.

Very sweet. Made me smile,a bittersweet write. It's funny how we think things are so everlasting at the time but it's good when we can look at them as a precious memory. I think most people look at their first love with fondness. That first heartbreak is the worst too!

Wow a second grade heartbreak? that seems cruel. However, I guess it would be a good thing to learn how to cope with the OTHER ones that inevitably came later.
