ratatat-tat, two ratty-soled shoes
tap to a tight track. a drum
slung loose around skinny hips, slack strap,
bounces to the beat of a city still standing.
bugles blow, loose-lipped boys grow blue in the face,
the bass drum boom-baps along, and bellies rumble
in sync with the sousaphone ba-bumming beneath
sweet sleepy-tongued saxophone licks.
vehement voices scream, screeching brass sings
songs of jumping jubilance, like dancing through the streets.
a pick-me-up beat lingers loose in fervent feet;
the feverish find feeling on fiery pavement.
