Shivoham Shivoham - VIDEO RECITAL

I am neither the body, nor taste, smell or sight
neither ears, nose or tongue, nor the ego or mind
neither ether nor water, nor earth, fire or air
I am Consciousness-Bliss, Shivoham, Shivoham

Neither loathing nor liking, delusion or greed
neither knowledge nor pride, neither merit nor wealth
neither pleasure nor pain, doing wrong, doing right
I am Consciousness-Bliss, Shivoham, Shivoham

Neither pilgrimage, mantra, nor worship or prayer
neither scriptures nor teachings, devotion or rite
Fear of death I have none, what I am has no birth
I am Consciousness-Bliss, Shivoham, Shivoham

Neither mother nor father, nor friends are my own
neither brother nor sister, nor husband or wife
nor disciple, nor guru, religion or caste
I am Consciousness-Bliss, Shivoham, Shivoham

What I am has no form, All-pervading I am
Everywhere I exist, beyond senses I am
I am Nameless and Boundless, Unmoved and Unknown
I am Consciousness-Bliss, Shivoham, Shivoham

painting "shiva" by maa

Author notes

unrhyming stanzas in anapaestic tetrameter

a metered poetic rendering of Adi Shankaracharya’s Sanskrit Hymn “Mano Buddhya” (also “Nirvana Shatakam” or “Atmanubhuti”) - based on the English translation
http://www.sankaracharya.org/nirvana_shatkam.php

the merit of this piece belongs to him ...

hear the original hymn chanted in sanskrit :

Shivoham … I am Shiva

Lord Shiva ... the unmanifested (or masculine) aspect of the Divine as Pure Consciousness (versus its feminine manifestation Shakti being Energy) ...
He plays the role of Destruction in the Hindu Trinity (the other two aspects are Creation represented by Brahma and Conservation by Lord Vishnu) ...

Lord Shiva is essentially our own Self, and when we are able to still our minds and gaze within, we will realize that our true nature is Pure Consciousness ...

and finally, my favorite music at the moment : a modern version of "Shivoham" by an amazing artist called manish vyas : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYaK2BGGoIw

Of all the readings I have seen of yours thus far, this truly is a remarkable presentation. I felt as though my soul took a journey to take your hand and feel your pulse as you sang, read, breathed and voiced the sheer perfection of spirit as it blazed up my spine. This is breathtaking and life giving. Spectacular!

    Total realisation

I am honored that you should ask me to enter your competition maa, you leave me breathless with your words and your art. I don't know what I could possibly add that would not be a poor imitation of your profound wisdom. All I can say is that I will try. And if anything is given to me that is worthy to present to you, it shall be written

I am a follower of Shiva as well, so this poem was quite a treat. I had never heard of the original sanskrit poem you linked.

Shanti! And thank you very much! Shiva sahasranama!

I love your painting of Lord Shiva and his iconic symbols.
All of the things and relationships we use to define our individuality are false, and much as it may irritate feuding sisters, they are more alike than different. When we step back from our labels, we are bliss, and there is nothing to fight about. However, as Einstein said, "Reality is an illusion, albeit a persistent one."
Many blessings will follow your writing, dear one, this is very good, and I love your meter.

    Love. That which IS.

I am so taken with the meter in this poem. Music unfolds, hold my heart so gently. Blessing.

I listened to the hymn on youtube, so that helped, bit like Wandika, I know very little about it...which of course makes it all the better to read. That's how we learn and progress, yet another good thing to meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds here on AP.

I do like the idea of the all-encompassing, "I am." It's that whole idea of oneness I guess.

This is a gift to your Indian and no Indian friends!
The thought of being nothing and yet all at the same time, has been so well showed by your bright and talented mind. You do have this special light around you, it illuminates your words and make them clear to us.
    Wonderful poem!

You are more Indian than I am. You went into such depths and digested Indian philosophy. Adi Sankara is reborn in you if I may say so. If you happens to be in India people will adore you.
Yes indeed we are nothing, taking shape ephemerally. The time has meaning if there is begining. There is no time when there is no interval. You captured essense of Indian thought. This coupled with western philosophy, I am sure you bring lot of light to the world.

I am right at the centre of nandhis. My place is called Nandyal. There are lots of springs here.Thank you fo sharing thoughts on Siva, though I am not too orthdox.
    With lots of love,
    Venu
