A woman before her time,
trapped within mechanical monotony,
when all that mattered
were fine silk dresses
and lice filled coiffed hair.
Behind lace hankies
they would giggle,
flirtaceous eyes ensnaring
the chosen bee to their honeyed.
longing looks.
Yet this one was different,
a courier of enlightened times.
In both urgency and disgust
she highlighted the poverty and hunger
that pervaded.
But one light had already been extinguished
by ignorance and unconcern
with dark, unfashionable matters.
Unable to free herself
from society's constraints,
she remained cornered between
rose thorns of stupidity and oblivion
and the one light of knowledge
that pulsed in yearning.
She would hold this beacon fiercely
until someone understood.
