The Cursing of Colonel Buck

he conned me into his bed
told me he loved me
convinced me I would be his only one

but when I became laden with child
he shunted me
left me

when I had the baby
and told him
he must step up and take charge
or I would tell the world of his doing

he told them all
that I was a witch
I flew around at night
on a broom

they hated me
were scared of me
and in the end burned me
at the stack

in my pain I screamed
that my mark would
always haunt him

    This certainly is different! I must admit that I had to look up who Colonel Buck is. I found an interesting article on it;

I guess it used to be common practice to get rid of people this way. Convenient, huh? In my own family geneology, I have a great, great.....ect. grandmother who was hung from being tried and executed as a witch, in America. In reading up on the history of it, I think it was to get the family's land. That was a common thing too.

The burning of person's accused of witchcraft was common in Europe. However, in America, they were hanged. I find it to be an outrageous and despicable thing, that was perpetuated out of fear and ignorance.

Dragonblue is right; unfortunately, this kind of senseless barbarity still occurs on many levels to this day.

Thank you for your entry. It was enjoyable and interesting!

The scariest part of this story is this kind of hysteria still occurs on a daily basis in this world of bigotry and prejudice. Witches may not be burned publicly at the stake, but they still persecute us by destroying our lives, taking all we own including our children, and leaving us devastated for our spiritual beliefs, when they really do not have a clue what those might be. This was a good short story encompassing the myth that you chose to personify. Good luck in the contest.

    Blessed Be~
