When We Were Young

Hush darling,
All on the summer day we threw caution to the wind. Silence.
The frost of winter came to blanch youth. Frozen in motion.
A dance round the fire, the amber burns in the glimmer of our
Old eyes. We saw this movie in the golden years.
Now we stand tarnished in the same park. The same night. Aged.

A stones throw away from tomorrow, but light-years from our past.
Yes darling. The years flew too soon. We rolled in the golden rye,
And time rolled right past us. Gone.
So much older now, and wiser from our troubles.
The creaking joints and aching bones, were nothing but a distant
Ship on the horizon of youth. Now sailed.

With ice-creams at 16 we laughed at the sea, washing away the face
Of the shore. The sand of time we against us honey. Spilled.
The laughter carved deep lines in our faces, they etched our life story.
A long forgotten book on a dusty shelf. A true story undiscovered.
Those years trailing behind us now. Fading.

Hush darling. I see the same spark in your smile.
The way you looked at me that night. In the park.
When we threw caution to the wind. Carefree.
Age was a disease we’d never catch, at heart that
Much is true. Dark.
The night now grows old, like us, it calls.
As I walk with you the same way I did.
When we were young.
