Coming Home

Missing image

I watched him,
standing broken
mid the sea of tears
tasted the salt that stung my lips
wished time could be a vortex

he could have belonged to anyone
having faced trials and tribulations
not of his own making
but of others

a myriad of childhood memories
flashed through my mind
laughter, carefree days,
sunshine...
now I wondered what untold nightmares
he had survived

this soldier, once whole
now a collection of shattered shards
in need of mending with family glue

home,
no longer a wish
becomes a reality

Author notes

for Gordon. More like my big brother than my uncle. Served in Iraq, now home embraced in the arms of his family

Not too many people see this in the ones that come back home.
    Thanks for this.

As friend and family of our brave men and women in wars' danger, I understand how you feel about your uncle. I've felt and still feel as you do, having had several in my own life through four wars and currrently a granddaughter who just returned from Iraq.

You've written an impressive testimony to your uncle, beautiful, loving, and proud.

Thank you Dee. My uncle is still recovering but he is so much better. Since writing this I have had a close family friend go and come back. After sitting talking to him, I know that for him, he actually joined the Army knowing full well he would be going to war.
He too is back home safe and in the arms of his family.

Family support is needed more than anyone can imagine. And the support is not only needed at the time of re-entry to citizenship, but for years to come. Good luck.

Thank you Trina. This has been screaming at me since his return. It was time to write. May they never be forgotten. J
