On the Other Side of the Velvet Curtain (Is Where I Stand)

I've been watching over you,
Popping in from time to time
To make sure you're still alright.
They caught me stealing glances
From behind the velvet curtain.
They said, "We've seen this scene before."
You're the star of this narrative,
Don't let just anyone steal the show.
You have got to be more careful,
I said I'd take one for the team,
But it's a solo act now.
Once the spotlight fades to black,
The show is over and what's done is done.
Catch that last glimmer of stardom
And wrap it up for another day.
There will be other days,
They promised me,
They promised you.
You've got a good fight left in you,
So don't go out until you do it justice.
I can't help but peek once more,
Before the curtain closes for night.
I'll see you in your dreams,
But I prefer your peaceful rest of day.
They're taking me away now,
Oh how they hate to see me linger so,
But I'll be back to lay eyes upon you again.
Walk away, into the blessed sunrise,
Or lift the curtain and join me in bittersweet dusk.
But I know you well,
You will walk amongst your stars, not mine.
They say it's not your time
And they are right.

Author notes

If you think this looks like a breakup poem, you're right, it does look like one. It could also be taken more literally as the star of the show and the one who always has to wait backstage. However, for me, the narrator of the poem died saving the other person's life (who is now in a coma) and is encouraging them to wake up instead of dying to be with them and letting the person who is at fault for the coma and death getting all the attention.

Please tell me what you think
