Ezekiel 37

“The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones.” - Ezekiel 37:1

My body is naked to the sky, Lord
Chest sinking like a mountain valley
Listening to the wind on a cool night
More like heavy sights than light breaths
My heart is tired, Lord, scared, Lord
Look how it hides beneath the surface
Like my ribs are a cage protecting from evil
Instead of slats where my soul can rise through

I used to cling to other’s skin, Lord
Attracted to the warm touch of laughter
I grafted myself onto them, Lord
As if I could melt myself into humanity
But here, six inches under skin and tendon
It feels more and more like six feet underground
For flesh decays with the smell of autumn smoke
‘Til I am left with bone more broken than I

The only sinews that are tangible anymore
Are the bindings in this Bible I cry upon
The prophetic words of this forgotten prophet
Singing out to me behind David’s longest Psalms
For breath is the loudest sound of life
The rhythm of your Word more vivid than my pulse
So that those chords that once tied me up to sin
Now cry out the power that Ezekiel found:

Let the valley of my heart rise once again!
Pour me in a flood of grace and understanding!
Make these dry bones turn back to moist flesh
From the very depths of my joyful eyes!
