Waking Moments

With the years,
I have developed
a finer appreciation
for simple pleasures.

Inner grace and beauty
outshine outward appearance.

My body, a bit saggier now,
still rises each morning,
carries me to work each day,
can still toil in the garden

where the smell of earth
delights my senses
and the simple act of
weeding the strawberry patch
becomes a sacred rite.

And if a sudden thundershower
sends me inside,
the relentless tattoo
of rain on the roof
is a comforting sound

a soundtrack for completing
household chores which I am
delighted to do
simply because I can.

Peace and contentment
can be found
in each waking moment.

I loved reading this. It was very soothing and peaceful.

I like the imagery you used, especially: "tatoo of rain", "a soundtrack".

    Beautiful poem.

Love the fourth stanza, with "the simple act of weeding the strawberry patch becomes a sacred rite." Nice "rain on the roof...a soundtrack for completing household chores." You have found and expressed a nugget: "I am delighted to do simply because I can." Yes, with such an attitude, peace and contentment CAN be found in each waking moment!
